Drying layer near a weakly attractive surface

چکیده
Depletion of the liquid density near a solid surface with a weak longrange fluid-surface interaction was studied by computer simulations of the liquidvapor coexistence of a LJ fluid confined in slitlike pores. In a wide temperature range the liquid density decreases towards the surface without the formation of a vapor layer between the liquid and the solid surface. This evidences the absence of a drying transition up to the liquid-vapor critical point. Two contributions to the excess desorption Γtot were found. The first one Γξ ∼ ρbulk ξ exists at any temperature and diverges as the bulk correlation length ξ when approaching the liquid-vapor critical temperature Tc. The second contribution ΓL ∼ ρbulk L0 originates from a microscopic drying layer near the solid boundary. At high temperatures the thickness L0 of the drying layer increases in accordance with the power law L0 ∼ ln (1-T/Tc), indicating a drying transition at Tc. The drying layer can be suppressed by strengthening the fluidsurface interaction, by increasing the fluid-surface interaction range or by decreasing the pore size. Hard colloidal rods near a soft wall: wetting, drying, and symmetry breaking
– Within an Onsager-like density functional theory we explore the thermodynamic and structural properties of an isotropic and nematic fluid of hard needle-like colloids in contact with a hard substrate coated with a soft short-ranged attractive or repulsive layer. As a function of the range and the strength of the soft interactions we find wetting and drying transitions, a pre-drying line, and ...

We report studies of the wetting behavior of Ne on very weakly attractive surfaces, carried out with the grand canonical Monte Carlo method. The Ne-Ne interaction was taken to be of Lennard-Jones form, while the Ne-surface interaction was derived from an ab initio calculation of Chizmeshya et al. @J. Low Temp. Phys. 110, 677 ~1998!#. Nonwetting behavior was found for Li, Rb, and Cs in the tempe...

The liquid-vapour phase transition near a weakly attractive surface is studied by simulations of the coexistence curves of water in hydrophobic pores. There is a pronounced gradual density depletion of the liquid phase near the surface without any trend to the formation of a vapour layer below the bulk critical temperature TC . The temperature dependence of the order parameter in the surface la...

In issues related to air pollution, the thickness of the boundary layer is known as the depth of the mixed layer because the pollution on the ground surface is mixed in this entire layer through turbulence processes. In most cases, the boundary of the area is clearly visible on big industrial cities. The depth of the mixed layer has an important effect in the concentration of air pollution whic...
